Passive House

The concept of “Passive House” (Passivhaus) started off in Sweden in 1988 and then developed in many countries in Central-Northern Europe.

Passive House is a particular living standard based on the integration of materials and technologies that ensure the building’s high quality standard and a significant reduction in energy consumption, about 90% compared to traditional homes. It is a structure designed to cover most of its energetical needs, for internal heating and cooling, using passive devices. These homes provide thermal well-being without or with minimal energy source inside the building and do not require any conventional heating, being able to maximize energy efficiency.

In the philosophy of the passive house, no fossil fuels are used, but systems based as much as possible on renewable energies. The most used system involves a heat pump that serves to produce hot water for domestic use and air intake.

For summer conditioning, however, you can leverage the controlled mechanical ventilation system with a cooling system using either horizontal or vertical geothermal energy to take advantage of the constant temperature of the subsoil. The energy needs are extremely low and can be covered with the resources already present.

Passive architecture therefore covers the largest share of building energetical needs through hot and cold flows directly from the outside environment. It uses a “thermal mass ” transition period, a quantity of materials with high thermal capacity. They can be made with “natural” insulating materials, using bio-building in order to have a small impact on the environment.

The Passive Home is at the foundation of environmental protection: with this constructive standard it does not intervene in the reduction of pollutants by adding filters or other compensation systems, it contributes to the protection of the territory and the climate without generating any kind of harmful substance.
